Tom Ford’s Journey to Design Icon
Thomas Carlyle Ford was born in Austin, Texas and spent most of his childhood in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He moved to New York City as a teenager and enrolled at New York University as an art history major. On an overseas exchange program he studied in Europe at Parsons School of Design in Paris, changing his focus to architecture, the degree he was ultimately awarded.
Tom Ford’s journey towards developing his iconic line of Tom Ford glasses began in earnest in 1990 when he relocated to Milan and joined Gucci as the Womenswear Designer. He excelled at the Italian design house revealing himself to be a design “rock star.” He was quickly promoted to Design Director in 1992 and Creative Director in 1994. At only 33 years old, Ford assumed responsibility for the design of all clothing and perfumes, as well as Gucci’s corporate image, advertising campaigns, and store design.
In 2000, Gucci acquired Yves Saint Laurent and asked Tom Ford to lead YSL as Creative Director, in addition to his existing duties. Ford worked wonders again and in 2002 he was made Vice Chairman of Gucci Group, an amazing, meteoric rise. But total creative freedom eluded him, so in 2004 Ford resigned from Gucci following a buyout by Pinault Printemps Redoute.
In April 2005, Tom Ford stepped out on his own and created the TOM FORD brand. He partnered with Marcolin Group to produce and distribute his Tom Ford glasses designs. The collection has been growing in reputation and prominence ever since, including accolades from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, US Accessory Council, TIME Magazine, and GQ Magazine.
